چکیده

Multicomputer Operating System for Unix (MOSIX) is a cluster-computing enhancement of Linux kernel that supports preemptive process migration. It consists of adaptive resource sharing algorithms for high performance scalability by migrating processes across a cluster. Message passing Interface (MPI) is a library standard for writing message passing programs, which has the advantage of portability and ease of use. This paper highlights the advantages of a process migration model to utilize computing resources better and gain considerable speedups in the execution of parallel and multi-tasking applications. We executed several CPU bound tests under MPI and MOSIX. The results of these tests show the advantage of using MOSIX over MPI. At the end of this paper, we present the performance of the executions of those tests, which showed that in some cases improvement in the performance of MOSIX over MPI can reach tens of percents.

Scalable Cluster Computing with MOSIX for LINUX

Mosix is a software tool for supporting cluster computing. It consists of kernel-level, adaptive resource sharing algorithms that are geared for high performance, overhead-free scalability and ease-of-use of a scalable computing cluster. The core of the Mosix technology is the capability of multiple workstations and servers (nodes) to work cooperatively as if part of a single system. The algori...

The MOSIX Cluster Management System for Distributed Computing on Linux Clusters and Multi-Cluster Private Clouds

MOSIX is a cluster management system that provides users and applications with a single-system image [1]. In a MOSIX cluster, users can run multiple processes by allowing MOSIX to seek resources and automatically allocate (and migrate) processes among nodes, without changing the interface and the run-time environment of their respective login nodes. As a result, users need not change or link ap...

MOSIX: How Linux Clusters Solve Real-World Problems

As the complexity of software increases, the size of the software tends to increase as well, which incurs longer compilation and build cycles. In this paper, the authors present one example of how clusters of Linux systems, using the MOSIX extensions for load monitoring and remote execution, were used to eliminate a performance bottleneck and to reduce the cost of building software. We present ...

The MOSIX Scalable Cluster File Systems for LINUX

MOSIX is a cluster computing enhancement of Linux that supports preemptive process migration. This paper presents the MOSIX Direct File System Access (DFSA), a provision that can improve the performance of cluster le systems by migrating the process to the le, rather then the traditional way of bringing the le's data to the process. DFSA is suitable for clusters that manage a pool of shared dis...

Load-balanced drift-diffusion model simulation: cluster software performance evaluation

Design of an avalanche photodiode with high gain and low noise that can achieve single photon counting is a research application of the drift-diffusion model. System-level load-balancing when combined with application-level load-balancing is shown to improve the performance of simulation code on a Linux cluster supercomputer. The two forms of load balancing are required to approach a smooth inc...
